Petrol Or Cigarette?
March 5th, 2006
Had an exchange of ideas with a lawyer friend after playing indoor soccer just now. We were talking about the recent petrol price hike. He suggested that wouldn’t it be better to increase the price of cigarette rather than petrol? To me, his idea really makes sense.
Government is spending so much tax payers’ money every year for anti-smoking campaign and whatever “Tak nak” campaign. Why wouldn’t they increase the price of cigarette instead? Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak asked us to change our life style, but come to think of it car is almost a necessity whereas smoking is definitely not!
Come on, please tell me which lifestyle is easier to change? Use your vehicle less and ask the whole family to take public transport more or quit smoking? Oi, en tao eh, you thought public transport using solar power meh? Furthermore, the effect of the increment of petrol price is far greater than cigarette. Now every hawker have their so called reasons to increase the price of foods, every school bus driver will increase their service charges, every Tom, Dick and Harry is complaining every single day!
Increase RM0.30 for 1 pack of cigarette sounds reasonable or not? To me it is. No? Then quit smoking and live a healthy life. That’s what we call hit 2 birds with one stone, right?
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said :-
Such changes in lifestyle should be made so that even if there were increases in fuel prices, Malaysians will be able to continue having the good quality and comforts of life which they have been enjoying
Good quality and comforts of life? Let’s wait and see. I pray so much the percentage of crime don’t increase in coming years. Due to high living cost, bad guys will do more bad things to earn easy money, isn’t it?
Ah, perhaps I shouldn’t have asked so many questions. Price already increased, ranting can only express my frustration.

I’m a smoker and although I don’t agree with your reasoning, I do agree that a 30 cent increase (if it really helps) for cigarettes is reasonable.
Heck, it’s very reasonable, the last price increase was way more than that.
Tobacco users gets taxed too…

I think for whatever reasons, raising the price of petrol will only harm people with low to moderate income. Strategic wise, this move is so wrong.
